Coconut Oil is pretty incredible stuff. How in the world could I ever live without it?
How DID I ever live without it during the first many years of my life?
It’s so crazy to think that we didn’t even know what coconut oil was in my house growing up. And now, I literally use it for, in and on EVERYTHING!!!
You many or may not be aware of the many different ways coconut oil can be used for healthy, safe, chemical free, toxin-free living.
Here are my top 12 ways I use coconut oil around our house:
1. Supplement Internally
Since Coconut Oil is INCREDIBLY healthy for you, we supplement with it internally every day. It’s anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, anti-fungal and a rich source of Medium Chain Fatty Acids ( such as Caprylic Acid and Lauric Acid). Since it helps minimize pathogenic bacteria and keep candida under control we make sure to put at least a Tablespoon in our morning shakes every day. The healthy fats also help keep us satiated all day, switching on fat-burning mode first thing in the morning.
Coconut oil is incredible to cook with. Because it is a saturated fat, it is much healthier to cook with than polyunsaturated fats such as olive oil. Saturated fats can withstand higher temperatures and aren’t as easily damaged as polyunsaturated fats. You can easily swap any oil you normally cook with with coconut oil and your body will thank you.
If you don’t want the ‘coconuty’ taste from the coconut oil, try buying triple filtered extra virgin coconut oil. This helps remove the sweeter coconut taste, making it the perfect oil to roast vegetables in or fry a big, juicy steak. Your family won’t even be able to tell that you’re using coconut oil and they’ll be all the better for it.
Surprisingly, you can even bake with coconut oil! I use it to make all our baked goods – from brownies to cookies to flatbread. And they taste incredible! Just use it as a butter or vegetable shorting replacement and you will be surprised how moist and delicious your baked treats will be.
4. Butter Replacement
As I already mentioned above, you can I use coconut oil as a butter replacement in cooking or baking. Due to the fact that I am cow dairy intolerant, I am so grateful to have coconut oil as a universal oil replacement. I even spread it on gluten free toast when we are having a carb load day and it’s delicious! If you plan to try it as a spread, you may also want to try coconut butter as it’s a bit creamier and makes an even more beautiful spread on toast!
5. Chemical Free Toothpaste
I spent years trying different healthy toothpastes all touting ‘non-toxic’ and ‘chemical free’. Unfortunately, after reading a million labels, you get sick of the long and confusing ingredient lists that aren’t exactly as pure and squeaky clean as advertised.
So, I finally starting making my own toothpaste after experimenting with healthy DIY recipes I found online. The result? A MUCH cheaper toothpaste with only 3 ingredients. We love it! You can get my easy recipe by clicking HERE!
6. Aluminum-Free Deodorant
Yes, you CAN make your own deodorant that ACTUALLY WORKS! I know you may be in disbelief as I originally was. But, after making up a little jar and giving it a try, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only does it work but you save so much money! Organic, toxic free deodorants are not cheap. But, unfortunately, most all deodorant brands out on the market, unless otherwise labeled, contain Aluminum and other toxic heavy metals and chemicals. So you either spend the money and but a high quality deodorant. OR you can make your own! Click HERE to get my favorite recipe.
7. Make-up remover
I use coconut oil to remove my eye make-up (mascara, eye-liner etc.). It does the job very effectively and I don’t have to be bothered with toxic chemicals going into my eyes. Just scoop a little coconut oil onto your finger if it’s hardened and massage around the areas where you want to remove make-up. Or use a cotton ball to apply around your eyes if the coconut oil is melted.
8. Oil Pulling
Oil pulling is SO healthy for you! This ancient practice is used in Ayurvedic medicine and helps you detox by pulling out nasty bacteria and toxins. It also has been know to naturally whiten your teeth. You want to do this upon waking BEFORE eating or drinking anything. All you do is swish a Tablespoon of coconut oil around your mouth for 15-20 minutes, spit out the oil, rinse out your mouth with water and brush your teeth as normal. It’s as easy as that!
9. Body Scrub
I make my own body scrub with half coconut oil and the other half organic sugar. It makes the best ‘sugar cookie’ scented body scrub. I store mine in a glass jar and keep it in the shower to exfoliate my skin a few times a week. (Note: I wouldn’t use this on your face, however, as coconut oil could clog your pores if you are predisposed to acne breakouts.)
10. Healthy Moisturizer
Coconut oil makes an INCREDIBLE moisturizer! I use it on my arms and legs and it gives my skin the perfect amount of moisture, leaving it looking younger and more toned. Again, you may not want to use it on your face if you are predisposed to acne breakouts. However, some people love to use it on their face and have had great success if their face lends itself to the drier side.
11. All Things Baby
All I’ve used on my son is coconut oil since he was born. It makes an excellent diaper rash cream as it’s both soothing and anti-bacterial ( and anti-fungal AND anti-parasitic). So it kills bacteria while soothing the irritated skin. I also slathered him in coconut oil from head to toe when he was a little baby. It’s the perfect moisturizer for a baby as it’s so healthy for their skin.
Last, but certainly not least, you can use coconut oil in your love making. You want to be careful what you use for lubricants as most contain tasty, toxic chemicals you don’t want going near your reproductive organs. They also disrupt the bacterial balance in those delicate areas. So, why not use coconut oil! One word of caution, however: you can’t use coconut oil with latex condoms as it can actually break down the condom. No one wants that! So make sure you buy latex-free condoms if you plan to use coconut oil.
