What is it? Do you have it? Leaky gut is a devastating disease that many are dealing with on a daily basis. It plagues them.
The reason for leaky gut can be summed up in a weak gut wall lining. Foods difficult to digest simply permeate the gut lining and seep into the blood stream. Let’s discuss what few know about Leaky Gut.
1. Leaky Gut is Simply that, A Leaky Gut
I know that sometimes there are crazy medical terms that can be challenging and confusing. However, this term literally means what it says. Leaky gut is when your guts lining has been compromised.
When you eat food that already scrapes the gut lining and is harsh on your system, like gluten, it leaks out of your gut. This definitely is not good for you. Once this happens you body attacks the foreign invaders(1).
The particulates of food make their way out into your blood stream and some wacky symptoms can occur.
2. Food Allergies Are A Major Symptom Of Leaky Gut
This may sound insane but according to the latest research many food allergies are caused by leaky gut (1). As you eat foods like wheat, eggs, or nuts they find their way into your blood stream.
When your gut has permeability it allows these foods to go undigested into the blood stream. This makes your immune system freak out, literally.
Many people will complain of symptoms like brain fog, stuffy/runny nose, inflammation, mood swings, severe abdominal pain, nausea, acne, eczema and a host of other maladies when dealing with food allergies. That’s because your body goes medieval on these foreign invaders.
Th issue is that these foreign invaders are in your blood. You begin to have an auto-immune reaction! Sounds crazy but Columbia University seems to think it’s the truth.
3. Leaky Gut and Candida are Friends
They seem to go hand in hand. Candida is a nasty fungus that grows within the body. Ever had a yeast infection? You may be dealing with a Candida overgrowth in your body.
To understand the correlation here we need to dig a little deeper into what Candida is and does.
Your bodies defense mechanisms struggle to defeat Candida. It has a unique protein that allows it to adhere to the gut lining. This adhesive protein disables your bodies natural mechanisms of removal.
Because Candida is asexual, and does not need a mate, it is virulent. As it grows it produces more small branches. Those branches multiply branches and their branches multiply branches.
These act likes roots of a tree. As they get longer and stronger they literally burrow holes in the lining of your gut. As you can imagine, stabbing the lining of your gut with Candida Roots is never a good thing.
4. Leaky Gut Can Be Caused By Gluten
Gluten can be a horrendous offender in the gut health world. It’s indigestible nature and rough shell creates hell in your intestines. So, of course, it can be a major contributing factor.
Where glutens true power lies is when one has a compromised gut lining, which includes most Americans. This compromised gut lining is weak. It’s thin and is wasting away
Once you shovel that baguette into your mouth it goes through the digestion process. However, the outer shell of the wheat, or the wheat germ, remains intact. Once it reaches your gut it goes Freddy Krueger on your gut wall.
5. Leaky Gut Can Be Caused By Stress
Stress handled inappropriately can be the leading cause of many things. Yet, when it comes to the gut it’s a leading offender.
When our outside environment causes us to geek out with anxiety our mind creates tension. This, because of how your mind is connected to your gut, causes inflammation (2). A host of diseases can cascade from this inflammatory response but one of them is compromised gut wall integrity. Meaning, your gut wall gets weak.
6. GMO Foods Cause Leaky Gut
The issue is that the bacteria in our gut and intestines have what is called the Shikimate Pathway (3). They are susceptible to the devastating effects of the pesticides sprayed on GMO foods. The main pesticide being Round Up by Monsanto (4).
Essentially, there is excellent research to show that the Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium, Lactobicillus and other health promoting bacteria are highly susceptible to destruction by Round Up (4). The bad bacteria survive fine.
Things like Salmonella and Botulism have no problem with glyphosate(4). This truth makes the GMO business the scariest thing ever cooked up in a lab.
Once these good bacteria are killed the gut lining is compromised. As the gut lining is compromised many begin to develop the symptoms of leaky gut.
