Ok, so you thought that mind controlling parasites were something out of the movies, right? Well, it may not be so far from the truth.
In a recent study at Champalimaud Center for the Unknown in Lisbon by Carlos Ribeiro and his team of researchers they found some chilling truths. Their paper released at the end of April this year (2017) may have revealed that gut bacteria signals your brain what to eat!
The Jist Of the Research
Ok, so Ribeiro and his team found some extremely interesting things. However, first there was an in depth study. Let’s talk about the research.
These researchers took a group of fruit flies and fed them three different diets. One was given a sugar solution loaded with all of the flies essential amino acids. The second group was given a solution that was missing the amino acids or proteins necessary for their diet. Then the third group had each essential amino acid pealed away one at a time.
So, to recap, we have one group of flies that has all of it’s essential amino acids or protein in its diet. Then there is a second group that has some or none of the essential proteins needed for the fly to live.
What they did after this was to supply the flies with a smorgasbord of water choices. One was pure sugar water while the other was filled with a solution that contained proteins the fly was deficient in.
The flies that were deficient in protein obviously gravitated toward the water with protein in it. The flies that had had the protein rich diet all along gravitated toward the sugar water. I mean, who wouldn’t?
What They Did Next…
So, here’s the twist. They then recreated the study and gave the flies that were deficient in protein probiotics of certain strains.
As they recreated this study over again they found that the flies that were deficient in protein but given a probiotic formula went to the sugar water instead. So, the flies, even though deficient in protein were fooled into thinking that sugar water was enough.
This is kind of a crazy finding. Essentially, the microbiome of the fly was tricking it into thinking that it didn’t need the protein. It modulated the feeding behaviors of these flies!
Another neat fact is that it also increased their sex drive when they had the correct probiotics in their system. I would like to see some more research on that!
So, what does this tell us? I see something that is remarkable here. We know that there is a major connection between your brain and your gut. It, according to the research, is a two way street. Your brain effects the gut and vise versa.
If this is truly the case and this study is correct than our gut micro-biome may be effecting food cravings. Our gut flora, if in dysbiosis, may be pushing us toward that donut instead of the salad that our body needs.This may seem crazy but what if the parasites or pathogens in your gut are influencing the way you eat?
This is a serious consideration based on this one piece of research. This is quite profound so we’ll have to see what else hits the research community. Yet, I find it groundbreaking in and of itself!
