There are many that believe you can’t have an allergy to gluten. Only those diagnosed with Celiac should restrict bread or wheat products.
Well, good research is pointing us toward the truth of the matter. Major research institutes are changing the way that we view food allergies.
The Naysayers and How to Handle It
“If you don’t have Celiac than eating gluten is healthy”, and, “if you restrict Gluten it could actually be bad for your health!” Have you heard this before?
My wife has had major allergies to gluten. She’s dealt with the symptoms of congestion, mood swings and headaches for years. Cutting out gluten solved every single one of her problems.
Is it all in her head? Well according to a recent study performed by Columbia University Medical Center, it’s not (1).
What the Science is Showing
This study took a group of people diagnosed with Celiac, a group that were perfectly healthy and a group that had “gluten sensitivity.” The group that had “gluten sensitivity” was confirmed to have no bio markers of Celiac.
They tested the subjects blood and stool while they consumed Gluten. The group with gluten sensitivity showed significant signs of gluten intolerance. Meaning, they weren’t crazy and no, they did not have Celiac.
Something was changing in their blood. They exhibited allergies without being diagnosed with Celiac. They had what is called leaky gut.
What is Leaky Gut?
Leaky Gut is a tricky disease and can manifest itself in many ways. The symptoms can develop over many years. Oftentimes, coming to a head in older age.
All subjects who had a self proclaimed gluten allergies had something in common. They had elevated blood serum levels of the proteins that make up Gluten!
Crazy as it may seem, these folks had the food that they were allergic to floating around in their blood stream! Hence the term, Leaky Gut.
The reason for leaky gut can be summed up in a weak gut wall lining. Foods difficult to digest simply permeate the gut lining and seep into the blood stream.
When Food Enters Your Blood Stream
Having wheat proteins in your blood stream is not ideal. So, your body attacks these proteins as if they were a disease.
Your body, over time, becomes like Seal Team 6. Eventually, it begins to experience major inflammation or allergy symptoms as it aggressively attacks the foreign antibodies.
