Spring is upon us. I can feel it in my bones as the sun starts to poke through the dark clouds. It makes me feel like a crazy lady that wants to clean everything.
My heart gets a flutter and the thought of vacuuming, dusting and throwing things aways gets me pumped. However, I often neglect to do the same to my body. So, I want to do a little spring cleaning this year with something much more important than my car, or house, my body!
With that said, I thought I’d give you a spring cleaning guideline for your gut. We all need to continuously populate and cleanse our gut. There are things we can do to get rid of the bad bacteria while giving our body the probiotics it needs to thrive.
WHERE YOU SHOULD BEGIN
I am quite fond of throwing things out. I know that for some people that can be a tough thing. Yet, in the world of spring cleaning it’s a must! That old couch or beat up rocking chair can go. The stuff piled up in the attic collecting dust should be thrown out.
As harsh as it might seem the same principles apply to your gut health. There are some foods that need to be thrown out! I recommend cleaning out your cupboards to be quite honest.
One of the first foods that I recommend removing includes conventional dairy and conventional meat. This may be the last thing you think about when you think about your microbiome.
MILK, CHEESE AND MEAT, REALLY?
The reason these foods must be considered lies in one word, antibiotics. We all know that taking an antibiotic can wreak havoc on one friendly bacteria. The term antibiotic literally means anti-life. Knowing this, to be wise, you should double up your probiotics when prescribed antibiotics.
Yet, what if I told you that 87% of the worlds antibiotic usage was for factory farmed animals? That means that a majority of your antibiotic intake is coming from factory farmed meat and conventional dairy (1). Even for the CDC, Antibiotic Resistance isn’t a joke anymore.
Oftentimes, the animals in a factory farm setting whether it be a cow, chicken or pig are fed antibiotics from birth. The terrible truth is that you’re overloading on antibiotics when eating these foods.
You should cut these out of your diet immediately. Come on, this is spring cleaning and sometimes you have to make hard choices.

INTRODUCING SOMETHING NEW
After you’ve thrown out some stuff, swept and dusted it’s always nice to add something new. For me it’s often times a car air freshener and a new trinket to hang from my rear view mirror. In the house it’s always great to get a new tablecloth or small piece of furniture. It makes all the hard work worth while.
So, with your gut you should consider taking a high quality probiotic supplement. You want to focus to increase good gut bacteria. Although, I must make a disclaimer here. Simply taking probiotics for a time is never enough. You need to be constantly consuming cultured foods.
There are many foods that you could be ingesting including Kefir, yogurt, cheese, kombucha, lacto-fermented vegetables and/or Sauerkraut. However, if you really want to go nuts you can try what I’m taking this spring!

I also highly recommend adding some Super Foods. What are superfoods? Well, it’s a term coined by the one and only David Wolfe. The man essentially brought the foods to us in our local health food stores.
Raw Chocolate or Cacao is one of his main crusades. Raw Chocolate is an amazing superfood that acts as a prebiotic for your gut flora. It is the most complex food that exists on the face of the earth.
Sadly, many of us have only had it in a cooked down, melted form that isn’t all that great for you. Can you imagine if you had never had an almond? That’s kind of what it’s like with Cacao.
