It’s been a long road on my journey to health. I spent many years eating the S.A.D. diet. I was anything but on the wheat & gluten free diet. I’d like to share with you, over a short mini series, my journey.
The Influence of Growing Up on a Farm
I grew up on a 600 acre dairy farm. Whether it was milking cows, preparing fields for planting or stacking hay I always had a job.
There came a point where my families farm either had to grow or die. We were mid sized and not surviving. So, my family began to use Retro Bovine Growth Hormone.
The cows became extremely sick. The promises made by the salesman were not coming true. The calves were dieing at alarming rates. Mastitis ran rampant.
We eventually shut down our farm. It was a several generation family owned farm. The atrocities of rbgh plus the pain of loosing a family legacy loomed.
To know what is actually in milk will alarm you. At some point I’ll dive deeper into what I learned. That way you can avoid consuming conventional dairy like I do.
I simply, as a teenager, got another job. Little did I know the influence that farming would have on my food choices as I grew older.
In high school I would treat my body like a piece of garbage. Often times kicking its needs to the side. Acting as if I were invincible.
My friends and I would go to fast food restaurants almost every other day. It was purely an addiction. I definitely was not on a wheat & gluten free diet!
My Last Dance with Fast Food
I had fast food for the last time when I was 17. Standing in the parking lot with friends at a McDonald’s in the Adirondacks. I already felt sick and was in disbelief that at 8 o’clock in the morning I could eat something so vile.
I haven’t had any type of fast food since that day. It made me feel so disgusting. I vowed that day to never eat fast food again.
A major part of why I decided to kick fast food was my experience growing up on a farm. Experiencing mass production dairy farming and seeing the disgusting filth of a CAFO farm will scare you.
Music Changed My Health
As I was working and acting like a normal high school kid I also obsessed over music. Again, never knowing that music would lead me to health.
Out of high school I went to college to study an instrument. I played many different styles. It helped me to meet many interesting characters.
During one of my gigs I met a friend named Ben. Little did I know that he was a health food guru. A literal genius. He had studied nutrition extensively and became a major influence in my life.
In Conclusion and Until Next Time
Well, until next time, I hope you enjoy the privilege of eating a healthy diet. Tell me, in the comments below, what is something in your life that surprisingly led you down the path to a healthy life style? Something that you would have never expected to?
