Many folks deal with the nagging reality that they must take a probiotic supplement of some kind. Almost all of us have an inkling of an idea that probiotics are incredibly good for us. Yet, what are the best probiotic supplements?
Many struggle to find the proper supplement or the supplement they’re ingesting isn’t good for them. The fillers are dangerous for their health or the strain isn’t effective. What if you weren’t meant to take a supplement at all?
What Are My Options?
Most will read an article and get quite inspired to get some probiotics in their system. One will read of the incredible benefits of probiotics and their powerful effects on the immune system.
It seems wildly simple until your standing in front of the wall of choices in your local health food store. You rifle through several options and find foreign words on the bottle. You’re not sure if the names on the back of the bottle are bacterial strains or some new cuss word.
The confusion can be mind boggling. Often times we settle for the bottle that looked the coolest or was the cheapest. This doesn’t get us very far.
I can boil your options down to two paths. Either you can take the path of a supplement/pill or you can do your best to get your Probiotic from a real food source.
What’s So Bad About Pills?
Truly, we wish we could fix all of our problems with a pill. It would be so much easier than lifestyle change. Simply pop the necessary pills and go on living the way we want.
It may seem strange to say but we often times don’t eat healthy and hope for a pill to make up for the rest. Instead of eating nutritious foods we take a multivitamin.
Instead of exercising to lower our blood pressure we take statin drugs. Instead of lowering our calories we look for the latest and greatest diet pill.
You might be asking, “what’s the big deal?” Well, first of all, a pill is simply a condensed form of food. You are changing your diet every time you ingest a new supplement or medication.
It’s hard to think about it this way but anything that you ingest is a part of your diet. So, when you add that “diet pill” you could instead easily add Goji Berries into your diet. That would be much better.
Then, there’s the fillers. Often we find ourselves keeping our gaze from the inactive ingredients on our supplements bottle. The inactive ingredients are as important as the active. You’re eating them, right? With that, the inactive ingredients will usually make up most of your supplement.
We will find all sorts of fillers that make up most of the pill. Things such as rice starch, potato starch, corn starch, gelatin, and others. These ingredients are not organic unless labeled and can be a major problem if consumed daily.
There are also additives on the outside of the capsules. Many companies will use a powder to allow the pill to slip through the manufacturing machinery. Things like Calcium Stearate, Magnesium Stearate and Titanium Dioxide are to name a few.
The main issue with these “flow agent’s” is that they actually block your bodies ability to absorb nutrients. In turn, coating the inside of your digestive tract with a film that blocks the absorption of other foods.
What’s So Good About Fermented Foods?
On the other hand, we have a beautiful thing. Lacto fermented vegetables should be a part of your diet if they are not already. It was all your grandmother’s rage, I promise.
In the days before the refrigerator and preservatives folks would simply ferment food. This was a great way to keep cabbage all winter long (sauerkraut). Yet, it did act as a double edged sword.
Even if you get the best probiotic supplement on the market for $50 a bottle you’re only getting probiotics in the Billions. Say 5-15 Billion little guys in one serving.
With fermented vegetables you see numbers in the trillions. In fact, with a couple of tablespoons of fermented vegetables you see around 16 TRILLION gut friendly bacteria. Oh, and wait, it costs you pennies on the dollar in comparison to a supplement.
Not to mention, when you’re eating organic fermented vegetables you cut out all of the bad fillers. You are getting something that is natural and good for you. It’s clean and will nourish you.
What Should I Be Taking?
So, you might be asking, what should I do? What are the best probiotic supplements? It’s pretty simple. The verdict is in and if you haven’t been convinced I don’t know what will do it.
Fermented vegetables are a far superior option to any supplement that you could find. You’ll get more beneficial bacteria. Heck, you can even go nuts and get a starter culture for your fermented veggies. This will insure that you’re getting the finest probiotics that the land has to offer!
