Up until now, I have been a very conscious egg shopper.
My criteria for the healthiest eggs? They must be Organic, Antibiotic free and preferably Cage Free.
Then I learned their’s ANOTHER level:
Pasture raised simply means the hens are free to roam and lay their eggs outside in fresh pastures. The eggs are much healthier this way.
That’s why I am SO excited to introduce you to Vital Farms. I just recently discovered this company whose family owned farm is based out of Austin, Texas. They sells the most INCREDIBLY tasting pasture raised eggs at the highest quality.
Vital Farms pasture raised eggs are exceptional for … reasons:
1. Room to Roam in Nature
Because their products are labeled with the Certified Humane Shield, Vital Farms guarantees that each hen has a space allotment of 108 square feet of pasture to roam on and forage for bugs and grass. This is important as there are many farms claiming their eggs are ‘pasture raised’. However, if they do not adhere to the Certified Humane Shield these ‘cage free’ hens are often jammed by the thousand in one ‘cage-free’ barns.
2. Bugs and Grass Versus Corn Feed
Vital Farms eggs are much healthier than your run-of-the-mill cage free organic eggs as the pastured hens eat a diet primarily of bugs, grass and seeds out in the pasture. Most factory farmed hens are fed a diet of mostly vegetarian feed consisting of corn and soy which isn’t the best for your health. Corn is problematic for many reasons and not something you want to consume as a regular part of your diet. Its inflammatory, hard to digest and high in Omega 6s. Soy is something you want to avoid all together as it messed with your hormones. Both corn and soy are usually Genetically modified which means they have been sprayed with Monsantoe’s Round Up weedkiller. ‘Round-up’ corn (which is any corn that is not directly labeled as organic) destroys your beneficial gut flora in your gut. Which eventually will destroy your health. Remember, you are what you eat ate.
3. Pastured Eggs versus Factory Farmed Eggs
Because Vital Farms hens eat whatever they find out in the pasture, they get much higher levels of vitamins and minerals than hens fed vegetarian (corn) feed. This means that pasture-raised eggs are far superior in nutrient density.
In 2007, Mother Earth News conducted a thorough comparison of the nutrient density levels in pasture-raised eggs versus factory farmed eggs. The results showed that pasture-raised eggs have:
- 1/3 less cholesterol
- 1/4 less saturated fat
- 2/3 more Vitamin A
- 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
- 3 times more Vitamin E
- 7 times more beta carotene
Another study conducted in 2008 showed that due to the high levels of sunshine that pastured hens get by roaming outdoors, pastured eggs contain 4 to 6 times higher Vitamin D levels that factory farmed eggs.
