For the last few years now, I have been playing around with many different versions of this DIY toothpaste. So this recipe is as easy and basic as you can get. And it works GREAT!
If you aren’t a crunchy hippie, you are probably asking…”Why make your own toothpaste?”
In my opinion, there are MANY great reasons.
I. First of all, Most Commercial Toothpastes are Filled with Countless Additives, Preservatives, Fillers and Chemicals. The most common chemical present in most ALL toothpaste is fluoride. Contrary to popular belief, fluoride is very harmful for your health. Only until the 1990s, the toxicity levels of Fluoride were dismissed as inconsequential. A scientific research article on “The Molecular Mechanisms of Fluoride Toxicity”.
“In recent years, several investigations demonstrated that fluoride can induce oxidative stress and modulate intracellular redox homeostasis, lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl content, as well as alter gene expression and cause apoptosis. Genes modulated by fluoride include those related to the stress response, metabolic enzymes, the cell cycle, cell–cell communications and signal transduction.” (1)
After learning how damaging Fluoride is to the health of your whole body, my husband and I immediately started buying the healthiest toothpastes we could find. And although the products were incredible, they all had one thing in common….they were all SO expensive.
This leads me to my next reason why I make my own toothpaste:
II. Making Your Own Toothpaste Saves You Money! In my recipe you only need three ingredients: Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Aluminum-Free Baking Soda and Essential Oils. You can whip up a jar of this toothpaste and it will last you FOREVER! Such great news, right?
You might, however, have one more objection. Does this DIY toothpaste actually work?
III. Yes. My Recipe for Easy, Chemical Toothpaste Actually Works. After using it for a few years now on a daily basis, I can confidently answer with a resounding, Yes! It Does Actually Work! Both my husband and I love tea, coffee and drink a cacao shake fore breakfast daily and we never have had problems with discoloration or staining.
Coconut Oil also have anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. This makes it the perfect candidate to serve as a base for my toothpaste recipe. (2) (3) (4)
And if you want extra whitening power, add in some activated charcoal. (I didn’t use charcoal for the toothpaste pictured. If you choose to add it, it will be black! But don’t worry…it doesn’t stain your teeth. It actually whitens them.)
Now It’s Your Turn
Those are my three top reasons why you should make your own chemical-free Toothpaste! So, now it’s your turn. Why don’t you give this easy, budget-friendly, gut-friendly toothpaste recipe a try. Be sure to let me know what you think in the comments section below!
Side Note: Be sure to store your toothpaste in a cool, dry place. If you live in a warm climate, store toothpaste in the refrigerator to keep oil from melting.
