The LowFODMAP diet is one of the all time go-to ‘solutions to suppressing the symptoms of IBS.
What does lowFODMAP actually mean, you might ask?
The acronym FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols.
These are basically short chain carbohydrates and sugar alcohols which can cause digestive distress in a digestive system that is out of balance.
Although eliminating and or lessening your exposure to High FODMAP foods can help manage your symptoms, there are three dark secrets that most IBS sufferers don’t know about.
1.The first dark secret behind the LowFODMAP diet is that it’s actually not meant to be a long term solution for any gut issue.
Why is this? Well, it largely due to the second dark secret:
2. The second dark secret is that the LowFODMAP diet is actually not healthy for your body when followed over a long period of time.
How do I know this? Let’s take a look at a 2012 scientific research article published in The Independent Peer Reviewed Journal: Gastroenterology & Hepatology:
“…elimination diets can result in dietary restrictions that can be burdensome to (IBS) patients and can potentially compromise their nutritional health. In addition, there is a lack of randomized controlled data that show a symptomatic benefit with elimination diets.”
This is because High FODMAP foods such as onions, garlic, cauliflower, cabbage etc are healthy foods for your body.
3. This leads us then to the third dark secret which is now self evident: a LowFODMAP Diet is not going to solve your IBS.
A 2015 published Genetic Analysis AS. from the Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics revealed that the overall gut flora of patients with IBS/IBD is very different than that of a healthy individual.
Meaning your gut bacteria is a major contributing factor to your IBS/IBD.
Just changing the foods you eat will have very little impact on the pathogenic bacteria that reside in your gut. You need a more extensive path than just cutting out onions and garlic.
Removing food is only mitigating some of the problem. You are giving the bad bacteria less food to proliferate and grow, yes.
However, simply cutting out the bad foods is not enough to eliminate these bad bacteria all together.
These bad critters exist for a reason. They are excellent at survival. They are ferocious and band together in tribes to survive in your gut. Studies how shown that some parasites and pathogenic bacteria will actually burrow into the lining of your gut to hide away and go dormant until they get fed.
Cutting out lowFODMAP foods will not deter them from their mission to rule your gut. The truth is that you can eliminate all of the foods that you want but it’s not going to work on the core issue.
Yes, you need to rebalance the inner ecosystem of your gut.
This is only a drop in the bucket to what it’s going to take to attack what’s really causing your IBS.
This is the BIGGEST mistake IBS sufferers make in trying to manage their symptoms. They are trying to stop their symptoms by only attacking the ‘tip of the iceberg ‘of the problem through using elimination diets, probiotics, supplements etc.
You need to attack the deeper problem – the root cause of what’s responsible for wrecking your body.
Otherwise, you’ll be in the bathroom all day long ripped away from your friends, family and your passions.
If you have IBS-D, your life will be one of being chained to the bathroom.
If you have IBS-C, you will deal with constant bloating, severe abnominal pain and a colon that is colgged with toxic fecal matter that you can’t eliminate. So the stagnant fecal matter starts to harden in your large intestine – dramatically increasing your risk of colon cancer.
Either IBS-D or -C , yours is a life of despair and feeling completely out of control over your own body.
As you now know, extensive research shows that elimination diets such as the LowFODMAP Diet are only a band aid approaches. They don’t attack the deeper problem – the root of what’s responsible for wrecking your body.
Cutting out specific foods is only 10% of the battle. This is the BIG mistake most IBS sufferers make that KEEPS them in the vicious cycle of re-occurring IBS.
You will keep picking up books or researching online only to have these sources tell you to ‘do this or you’re going to die’ and another that tells you ‘don’t do that other thing or you’ll die …do this’!
Sadly, most of these books and articles online are backed by outdated research or no scientific research at all. You are then left confused and frustrated by the endless amount of conflicting information.
Then, you go back to that restrictive diet you’ve tried a million times and just muscle it out with will power – a diet that doesn’t even work…that you give up in 3 days.
Then, you’re hopeless. AND YOU STILL DON’T KNOW WHAT’S RIGHT AND WHAT’S WRONG. This can be fatal for your future health.
You are at risk for debilitating diseases. You don’t have 10 years for trial and error. You need to change NOW.
