Why Your Poop Is Important
I love discussing easy methods in monitoring your personal health. Let’s be honest, poop is not something we like to examine. Heck, most fear pooping in public. People might know that we commit such an act!
However, your digestion is key to your overall health. Many studies are cropping up from major medical universities and medical journals correlating digestion to your overall mood, well being and physical health.
If that’s true then your poop is important. Your poop can tell you many things about your digestive health. It’s a true bio-marker that will inform as well as warn you. Heed your poo, it may be trying to tell you something.
What is Healthy Poop?
I’d first like to go over what a healthy bowel movement looks like. You should be having regular bowel movements. This can be different for different people. Yet, a healthy frequency would be 1-3 times a day.
Below is the Bristol Stool Chart. This is a great starting point in the examination of the all important scat.
Now, the ideal poo should look like type 3 or type 4. Type 3 is still soft but with small cracks along it. While, type 4 is smooth and thinner. Type 4 being the ideal of the two.
If Your Poo Isn’t Ideal
The truth is that if your poo may not be perfect. Type 1 on the chart above means you are most likely dehydrated. However, I do caution you as this may be a sign of a food intolerance. In the case of type 1 fecal matter it may take your digestive system one hundreds hours to process the food you’ve eaten.
Again, this would be a serious case of constipation. Your body requiring days to pass your stool.
Any good physician would be able to tell you if your fecal matter is showing signs of food intolerance or a simple case of constipation.
If you’re pooping type 7 you’re body could be taking as little as 10 hours to process your food. This can be an indication that you’re consuming far too much fiber.
Why Does My Poop Float
This is a common question. People wonder what it means about their health. The truth is that if your poo immediately sinks to the bottom of the toilet you’re probably NOT absorbing nutrients properly.
Now, if it floats and never sinks you’ve got a different problem altogether. You’re most likely not absorbing fats properly. This could be caused by any number of problems. That’s for another post.
Naturally, your poop should float for a short while and slowly sink to the bottom. This means that your poop has a small amount of air bubbles. This is from a healthy digestive tract and means your stool is proper!!
