So, over my memorial day weekend I have to say I geeked out about a documentary. You know, you curl up with your tea and turn on your favorite documentary for downtime! Oh, wait, you don’t do that?
Anyways, I watched What’s With Wheat. You can catch this on Netflix or I’m sure get it off of Amazon. There was some incredible, and I mean, incredible information in this documentary.
Yet, something caught me. They covered one topic that was riveting. They ripped into the power of Glyphosate, or Round-up, to destroy your gut bacteria and how that effects the production of major neurotransmitters for your brain.
Round Up Ready Corn and Everything Else
This documentary was digging deep into the truths of wheat and how bad it is for you. Then they took a turn toward the gut flora. Starting out mainly with the pesticide/herbicide called Round Up.
This stuff is sprayed heavily on wheat across the United States. It is the most widely used chemical to ever exist. Over 9 million tons have been used since it’s inception in 1974 (1). This is a serious overuse and abuse to our environment let alone ourselves.
So, this chemical is mainly used on crops like Corn, Soy, Wheat and Canola. These 4 ingredients compose 99% of what we see on grocery store shelves. Get savvy when you read those ingredients. These plants are in almost everything and sometimes have deceitful names.
Glyphosate and its Chief Aim
Most, when discussing Round Up, will tell you that it’s completely harmless to humans. That is and is not true. Let’s dig into some of the science here.
Glyphosate is the main active ingredient in Round-up. This ingredient disrupts what is called the Shikimate Pathway in plants. It’s kind of a fun word to say and its the main way that most plants digest carbohydrates.
Essentially, this pathway takes the carbohydrate and converts it into aromatic amino acids. Turning the carbs into good old plant food. This gives the plant its sustenance. There are 7 different metabolic phases that occur in this pathway.
Glyphosate cuts right to the quick. It disrupts the very first pathway. In that first pathway, Glyphosate hammers down the metabolism of the plant and causes it to starve (2). It would be like someone cutting off your esophagus from your stomach. You eat and eat but get nothing.
“Luckily,” wheat doesn’t have this pathway. However, Corn, Soy and Canola do. So, Monsanto, the producers of Round Up, have genetically modified the plants to not be effected by the Glyphosate. You can spray buckets upon buckets of Round Up on these plants, and everything around it dies except the GMO plant.
Animals Aren’t Effected?
Well, humans and all other mammals do not have the Shikimate Pathway. Because of that truth, Glyphosate is considered safe for humans. Any of these plants mentioned above are bathed in it.
Well, you should think again. There are more bacteria living in your gut than the trillions of cells that make up your entire body. You are more bacteria than anything else.
The good, healthy, bacteria that reside in your gut have the Shikimate Pathway. Actually, the most important bacteria such as Acidophillus, Bifidus and Lactobicillus have this pathway as their main form of digestion.
Meaning, that Round Up is decimating the good bacteria in your microbiome. The bacteria that secretes the necessary enzymes for you to digest food. The bacteria that hardwires your immune system.
However, this gut bacteria does so much more than what’s been stated above. Have you ever heard of a thing called the gut brain axis? It’s one of the most powerful findings of the 20th Century.
Neurotransmitters, Gut Flora and Depression
Ah, the plot thickens. So, some of the latest research has revealed one unbelievable role that the gut flora play in the human body. Not only does it regulate immune response, cravings, heart health, weight, and skin clarity but it handles one vital process.
Your gut flora produces over 90% of the Neurotransmitters used by your brain to function (3). Major hormones like 5-HTP, trytophane, Serotonin, Melatonin and a host of others are produced by your gut flora!
This means that your depression could be caused by the decimation of your gut flora from eating products laden with Round Up. This is one of the most profound realizations.
You could be causing things like depression, anxiety, and insomnia simply by the food your putting into your body. This chemical that’s practically been sprayed everywhere could be giving you mood swings.
This is was one of the most profound topics in What’s With Wheat. Yet, there was so much more. Honestly, you need to watch it. Check it out and let me know what your thoughts in the comments below. You can also check out the trailer here:
